A 2020 Year-End Update from the DCBS Treasurer on behalf of the Board of Directors.

Dear D.C. Blues Society members, supporters, and aficionados:

Normally, we would be busily preparing for our annual New Year’s Eve party at Post 41. Obviously, that is just not in the cards this year. Live music is healing for our souls and lies at the core of what the D.C. Blues Society is all about. While we cannot host our jams, happy hours, concerts, and festivals right now, we have work to do. The Board of Directors of the DCBS have a moral and fiduciary responsibility to ensure that our organization is prepared to keep the Blues Alive for many decades to come. Even before the pandemic, the Board recognized a critical need for greater financial and operational transparency and accountability. Once we were shut down, this became the task at hand.

We expect the ongoing work of getting our administrative house in order will open up previously unavailable potential sources of sponsorships, grants and other funds. This will provide more and better options as we develop exciting events for the post-pandemic live music world. That is the plan. We retained the accounting firm of Citrin Cooperman in order to assist us in this effort. The first step is developing a financial reporting process consistent with generally accepted accounting practices. I have nearly completed the move of all our accounting systems into QuickBooks, integrating and reconciling our financial records for the past two years. This is a time-consuming process for an all-volunteer organization like the DCBS, but once completed, we can then set up streamlined operational structures. This will allow us to make better informed decisions and transparently report on the same to you.

Between memberships and donations, your contributions have helped sustain our business operations. The raging COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has offered unprecedented challenges for everyone, not only the blues community. The pandemic has claimed so many of our loved ones, beloved musicians, shuttered venues, and forced cancellations of all the events that normally bring us together. Despite these hardships, many of you have remained steadfast in your commitment to the D.C. Blues Society and our mission to preserve blues heritage and to celebrate the artists who create blues music. On behalf of myself and the rest of the Board of Directors of the D.C. Blues Society, Pete Salsbury (President), Pat Bransford (Secretary), Dorothy Hines, John Neumann and Larry Spiwak, we are deeply grateful for your outpouring of generosity during these troubling times. We also send our best wishes for your health and happiness throughout the New Year.

With appreciation,

Adam H. Oppenheim

September 2020 Message

2020 has been a difficult time for everyone. Clearly, musicians, restaurant and music club owners, and for-profit as well as non-profit music-related organizations such as the DC Blues Society (DCBS) are one large category that has suffered.  During these challenging times, the DCBS is asking the community that has supported our monthly events and festivals over the years to continue to support DCBS by keeping their membership current and renewing it on time.  As an added incentive for members to renew their memberships, DCBS is offering 1-year renewals to include an extra 6 months (for a total of 18 months at no extra cost) and 2-year renewals to include a total 30 months at no additional cost...

Please Support DCBS!

Thank you all for your support. Whether coming out to a 1st Sunday jam, a 4th Friday Blues Happy Hour or coming out to one of our special event shows this year, we really appreciate YOU!

We work hard to present free monthly jams and blues happy hours and terrific concerts at low prices. We need help to keep our ticket prices down, so that our shows are accessible to as many people as possible. We are a small organization, and ticket sales and donations from individuals make a significant difference to us.
Please consider making a donation to the DCBS. We are an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the blues and are recognized as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit corporation with the Internal Revenue Service. You can make an on-line donation:
